Engine Co. 1
Engine 1 is one of the three original companies initially incorporated into the paid Louisville Fire Department in 1858. The company began service with an 1857 AB Latta steam engine that was purchased by the Louisville Underwriters a year prior to the establishment of the paid department. Engine 1, along with Hazmat 1, has been a two-piece specialty company since 1990. The company responds with both units on all calls, keeping the department’s primary Hazmat Company together at all times. The two reside at a modern station at 1100 Grade Lane, which opened in 1995.
