Emergency Care Unit History
Lexington began providing Fire Department ambulance services in 1969 utilizing converted station wagons. In 1972 they transitioned to vehicles that provided better transport capability and could carry fire and rescue equipment. Today, Lexington operates 12 front line Emergency Care units. Each is a company staffed with a minimum of 3 Firefighter Paramedics or EMTs, including an Officer. The department also cross-staffs 3 "surge units" for times when run volumes have spiked. A fleet of spare units is also available.
Since Lexington began providing ambulance service, there have been multiple variations of Emergency Care units.
